McDonald’s history began in the 1940s when brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened their first restaurant in San Bernardino, California. Originally a barbecue drive-in, the brothers eventually revamped the business by focusing on a simple menu of burgers, fries, and milkshakes. The Speedee Service System, which reduced service times, caught the attention of salesman Ray Kroc. In 1955, the company entered into a franchise agreement with Ray Kroc and opened the first McDonald’s franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois.
